In this world, it is often difficult for us to find peace amid
all the chaos. Worry is always at the door wanting to snatch our peace. Thankfully,
we have a Father who cares and wants us to always remain in His peace.
John 16 vs 33 says “These things I have spoken to
you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you [b]will have tribulation;
but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”
Jesus did not promise a life free of challenges, but instead
He reassures us of His presence, His peace, and His finished work (He has
overcome the world). He is explaining that to subdue the effect of the tribulations
of this world, we must find peace in Him.
In John 14 vs 27, Jesus says “Peace I leave with
you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not
your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
We also see from here that as believers, Jesus has given us
His peace. The beauty about His peace is that it is not like what the world
gives, it is long-lasting and endures through every situation. The peace of
this world on the other hand is based on things that we see, the achievements,
successes, wealth, accolades etc. It doesn’t last and can be gone with no
warning.
In Philippians 4 vs 6 – 7, Paul focuses on 3 key things
-
- Not worrying – Jesus in Matthew 6 vs 25 – 34 told us not to worry. The Lord who provides for the birds of the air and beautifully clothes the lilies will take care of us. He also encouraged us to seek Him and His Kingdom first, to set our affection on Him and not the issue
- Being grateful – having a gratitude journal where we write the things God has done is helpful. We can revisit the list continuously. Doing so will remind us of God’s faithfulness and goodness
- Seeking God in prayer – Jesus has called us to ask, seek, knock. Let us put aside the worrying and go to God in prayer with the issues troubling us
By doing these things, we can fully experience God’s
peace that passes all understanding. This peace will become a compass for how
our hearts and minds operate. This means we will not longer be weighed down by
the issues of life because we now rest in His peace.
Another key factor in experiencing God’s peace is trust.
Isaiah 26 vs 3 says “you will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”. Our mind and heart must take on a
posture of trust. Trust in God and His ability to prove Himself and honor His
word. Jesus said in John 14 vs 1, Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in
God, and trust also in me.
We build our trust in God by spending more time with Him and
in His word. The more of His word we feed on, the more those words replay in
times when doubt and worry arises. We combat the negative voice with the voice of truth which in
the word of God.
My encouragement for you today is to rest in God’s peace. Things may not go how we want them to but God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55 vs 8 - 9). Also, whatever He says will surely stand because it is impossible for God to lie.
Father
today, we give every burden and worry to you and we rest in your peace.
