Mary the mother of Jesus in John 2 vs 5 said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it”. When we read the story in John 2 vs 1 – 11, we see that the performance of the miracle of turning water to wine was dependent on the obedience of the servants. In verse 7 and 8 of John 2, Jesus gave them specific instructions and they obeyed , ultimately unleashing the miraculous. This reminds me of Matthew 21 vs 28 – 31, where Jesus narrated the Parable of the Two Sons. In this parable, we see Jesus differentiate between those who say they will but don’t and won’t but do . At the core of obedience is the doing . 1 John 2 vs 17 says “ And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” The Greek word for abide is menó , which means to be held, kept, continually remain, stay.
